The United Nations human rights body expressed being "horrified" by the security action, calling for "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Operation Impact

The area of favelas near Rio's airport is considered to be the central command of among the nation's strongest organised crime groups.

Local authorities stated at least 50 of the deceased were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Numerous individuals were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Resident Accounts

Locals have compared the mountainous region - home to about 300,000 residents - to a "battlefield" since the raid started.

Transport routes stay blocked across the area.

Organized Crime Spread

The Red Command group has been increasing their territory across the Rio state, increasing drug trafficking routes and dominance over the slum communities.

Local law enforcement reported over 200kg (441lb) of drugs were seized in the operation, along with dozens of firearms.

Operation Background

The coordinated mission by different law enforcement agencies comes after a twelve-month inquiry.

Dozens of the suspects are thought to be members of a faction from the northern region who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.

Large-scale police operations are regular in the country ahead of major international events in the South American nation.

The UN climate summit the climate conference is taking place in the northern city of Belem in November.
