Challenges Continue for Relief Supplies in Northern Gaza In Spite Of Temporary Peace

While the Rafah crossing at the Egyptian border starts functioning soon, humanitarian organizations encounter significant obstacles distributing supplies to Gaza City, the territory most severely affected by starvation, analysts state.

Infrastructure Challenges

Major routes are virtually impassable due to extensive devastation across the devastated territory – or continue to be controlled by security personnel. Any transport that stops working is probably will be immediately stripped.

Zikim, the main entry point to the northern territories, destroyed during multiple years of fighting, has been inactive for multiple weeks, and authorities have informed NGOs in Gaza that there are no current intentions to activate the border point, as stated by aid workers.

Destruction in Northern Territories

The main city was the objective of a significant armed campaign launched in August that was continuing when the temporary truce was signed a week ago.

Damage in the northern area has been widespread, with entire towns including Beit Lahiya and adjacent communities in devastated as well as many of the surrounding regions of the main city.

"Any activation of a crossing into Gaza is welcome, but we need to guarantee we can help civilians where they are," said an experienced official from an international NGO.

Humanitarian Conditions

Local residents said many of the estimated 300,000 people who have gone back to the north from the crowded shelter regions where they had been sheltering during the Israeli offensive were now "staying" among the ruins of their homes, often without any shelter and with scarce nutrition or hydration.

A spokesperson from a humanitarian body said the destruction in Gaza City was "overwhelming".

"We see block after block, structure after structure ... there is extreme need for clean water. Conditions are severe. We must have each access route open," the official, who was in Gaza City recently, added.

Restricted Entry

An organization head based in Gaza City said the necessities in what used to be the territory's active economic and community focal point were "enormous".

"We see hope and faith but there needs to be immediate enhancement on the crossings. We didn't witness major improvement on the ground yet," the official commented.

"We are still getting a small quantity of assistance [and] we are just beginning to comprehend the degree of destruction. Numerous roads are completely covered in ruins ... there is almost no home that is undamaged. There is damage and unexploded ordnance across the region."

Ongoing Developments

In recent days, aid agencies said small quantities of essential fuel entered Gaza for the first instance in many weeks, along with consignments of flour, rice and produce. The recent deliveries sent commercial prices tumbling.

In the central town, a civilian said there had been some improvement since the truce.

"Commercial areas are containing products, fresh goods, and fresh fruit, although the prices are still high and not affordable for everyone," the individual stated.

Colder Months Preparations

"The primary requirements at present, especially with the approach of colder weather, are to have a tent to shelter us from the low temperatures and warm garments because the markets do not have adequate garments for us or, if they exist, they are extremely limited and prohibitively costly."

Nine UN-supported food preparation facilities in various locations have restarted operations since the truce.

Support Delivery

Transport were announced to have come through the Kerem Shalom crossing through Israeli territory to Gaza during the week, though exact numbers were unclear.

Israel's news organization announced that the day's aid deliveries would include edible goods, treatment resources, energy sources, cooking gas and tools to repair essential services.

"Relief supplies continues to enter the conflict region through the border access point and alternative access points after Israeli security inspection," an government spokesperson said.

Distribution Challenges

But counting the number of trucks could be inaccurate, cautioned a professional from a relief agency. "We need to know what is in the transports and their capacity levels for it to be a genuinely useful metric," the representative said.

Private companies are transporting groups of trucks carrying chocolate, fizzy drinks and light food, which have minimal health benefits, while urgent medical support for minors or others who have gone without sufficient nutrition for two years are unavailable.

Medical Status

In Gaza City, only few healthcare facilities are operating, compared with numerous in summer.

Numerous organizations have significant funding in assistance materials stockpiled near the territory pending distribution. A UN agency assisting Palestinians across the region for a long time has three months' worth of sustenance for all residents ready to be delivered.

"We possess the materials, the tools and the skills ... we just need the entry," said a humanitarian staff member, who recently came back from Gaza.

Political Considerations

A diplomatic framework details that "full" aid should enter Gaza and be distributed through humanitarian bodies and the Red Crescent, without disruption from any armed factions or national security.

This appears to exclude the controversial authority-approved humanitarian organization which commenced activities in spring, leading to disorderly situations and numerous casualties as large groups of people gathered around its assistance centers.
